Sustainability

Steel is one of the most recyclable materials there is. We're working to make the way we produce and deliver it cleaner too.

5%

Carbon reduction

Our target reduction in carbon emissions by 2028, set out in our Carbon Reduction Plan.

SSA

Certified products

We maintain certification of our products with Sustainable Steel Australia, to level 2 or higher.

ISO 14001

Certified

Our environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001:2015.

Energy

Using less power

Electricity is a significant part of both our costs and our carbon footprint, so a capital program is underway to upgrade plant and equipment and reduce demand.

  • Processing machinery is being upgraded to modern, energy-efficient PLC machines
  • High-bay skylights light the plant during the day
  • Lighting is being upgraded to energy-efficient LEDs
  • We monitor run times and turn machines off when not in use
  • We're exploring renewable energy where it's practical

Planning

Smarter loads, less waste

We're implementing a management information system (ASA) that tracks the steel we process against the steel we sell. That gives us a yield benchmark to cut raw material waste and the energy used to move and process it.

The same system helps us plan delivery routes and loads, so our trucks travel less distance and use less fuel per tonne delivered.

Waste

Recycling what we can

  • Scrap steel and off-cuts are collected by a licensed metal recycler
  • Cardboard, paper and commingled recycling are collected by Veolia
  • Dust from our collectors is reused as an industrial filler
  • Waste oils are recycled into fuel for cement production
  • Damaged timber pallets are repaired, and the rest go to timber recycling
  • We ask suppliers to minimise packaging

Our commitment

Working with our supply chain

We work with suppliers to reduce emissions in the production and transport of materials, and we prioritise local and sustainable sourcing. Every employee and subcontractor shares responsibility for protecting the environment, and daily pre-start and toolbox meetings keep it front of mind.

Target: a 5% reduction in carbon emissions by 2028.
